When Faith Becomes Custom-Made
We live in a world built around customization. Our phones learn our habits. Our streaming services recommend what we'll enjoy. Even our coffee orders can be tailored down to the smallest detail.
Customization is wonderful—until it begins shaping our faith.
Judges 17–18 tells the story of people who never stopped talking about God. Micah built a shrine. A Levite served as priest. The tribe of Dan even sought the Lord's blessing. Yet beneath all the religious activity was a troubling reality: they had quietly begun redefining God according to their own preferences.
That temptation hasn't disappeared.
It still whispers today:
"I know the Bible says...but..."
"I can follow Jesus without being connected to His Church."
"I'll decide what obedience looks like."
The danger isn't always abandoning Christianity. Sometimes it's editing Christianity until it no longer challenges us.
One of the most sobering moments in the passage comes when we discover that the compromised priest is Jonathan—the grandson of Moses. In only a few generations, faithful worship had become counterfeit worship. It is a powerful reminder that authentic faith is never inherited automatically. It must be intentionally preserved and faithfully passed on.
The closing words of the story explain everything: "In those days Israel had no king." Everyone became their own authority.
The gospel offers a better answer.
Jesus did not come to become the customized king we wanted. He came as the rightful King we desperately needed. He lovingly calls us away from self-made religion and into joyful submission to His perfect authority.
May we be people who refuse to edit God, treasure every page of His Word, and faithfully pass an authentic faith to the generations that follow.
