Drifting Without Anchors

Most of us do not deliberately decide to drift. Drift happens quietly. We stop paying attention to our bearings, loosen our connection to what once held us steady, and eventually discover that we are no longer where we began.

The same thing can happen in our faith.

We may continue to respect the Bible, quote familiar verses, and affirm that Scripture matters while allowing other voices to exercise greater authority over what we actually believe. Our feelings, favorite personalities, cultural assumptions, and carefully curated feeds can gradually become the lenses through which we judge Scripture—rather than allowing Scripture to judge them.

When Scripture loses its authority, we drift from the faith once delivered toward a faith of our own making.

Reading the Bible is therefore more than a religious obligation. Scripture gives us discernment and steadily reshapes our worldview around Christ. It teaches us what is true, exposes what is wrong, corrects our course, and equips us to live faithfully.

God’s Word also produces maturity and peace. That does not mean Christians never feel hurt or experience offense. It means we become less easily controlled by those experiences and less likely to be knocked off course by them.

When Jesus faced temptation in the wilderness, He answered with the truth of Scripture. Yet Satan also quoted Scripture, reminding us that merely knowing isolated verses is not enough. We must learn to understand God’s Word faithfully, in context, and as part of the whole counsel of God.

SOAP—Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer—gives us a simple way to begin. Read the passage. Pay attention to what it actually says. Ask how it should change you.

Then respond to God in prayer.

This week, give Scripture the first word before the world becomes the loudest voice. Open the Bible, listen carefully, and allow God’s Word to correct your course.
