When the Soul Gets Tired

One of the things I appreciated about Pastor Marv’s message on Sunday was how much permission Elijah’s story gives us to be honest about our humanity.

Here is a man who had been tremendously faithful.

He confronted a king. He trusted God through drought. He witnessed miraculous provision.
He stood on Mount Carmel and watched God answer by fire.

And then he reached a point where he simply said, “I have had enough.”
That contrast matters.

Sometimes we assume that if we are tired, discouraged, overwhelmed, or struggling internally, something must be wrong with our faith. Elijah reminds us that even faithful people can reach the end of themselves.

But Pastor Marv gave us another important warning: exhaustion can distort our perspective on ourselves, others, and God.

A feeling can be completely real without telling us the whole truth.

That is why I keep coming back to the three words he gave us:

Recognize. Receive. Reorient.

Recognize what is actually happening within you instead of ignoring it.

Receive the care God is providing instead of believing you have to power through everything yourself.

And then allow God to reorient the conclusions exhaustion has caused you to make.

I love that God did not abandon Elijah beneath that broom tree. His exhausted moment was not the conclusion of his story.

Neither does yours have to be.

There are times when following Jesus means pressing forward. There are also times when faithfulness means becoming quiet enough to admit, My soul is tired.

And there, too, God meets us.

Not with shame.

With care. Presence. Truth.

And a way forward.
