The Freedom of Enough
One thought from Sunday has stayed with me: more will never tell us when we have enough.
That is difficult to believe in a world where nearly everything around us is designed to keep the finish line moving. There is always a newer version, a nicer option, another experience, another upgrade, another reason to believe life would be just a little better if we had a little more.
And yet, at some point, “enough” has to become a spiritual decision.
Contentment does not mean that ambition is wrong, that saving is unnecessary, or that enjoying what God provides is somehow unspiritual. Scripture gives us plenty of room to work hard, plan wisely, provide for our families, and enjoy God’s gifts with thanksgiving.
The deeper question is whether those gifts have begun to own our hearts.
One of the ways God loosens that grip is by teaching us to give first. Firstfruits generosity quietly declares that my security is not found in keeping everything I can. God is my provider. His kingdom gets the first word in my financial life rather than whatever happens to remain after everything else has been paid.
But even that is not the destination.
I do not want to become someone who faithfully calculates a tithe and then assumes everything else is mine to consume. I want enough margin in my life that when God places a need in front of me, generosity can be more than a good intention.
Someone needs groceries.
A missionary needs help.
A family experiences an unexpected crisis.
The Spirit simply whispers, Help them.
There is a particular freedom in being able to say yes.
Maybe the question worth carrying this week is not, “How can I get more?” but, “Has God already given me enough to live differently?”
Contentment says, I have enough.
Firstfruits says, God comes first.
Margin says, I do not have to consume everything.
And generosity says, Now I am free to say yes.
May Jesus continue forming us into that kind of people.
