When What You Have Isn’t Enough

Most of us know what it feels like to stand before a need that exceeds us.

We see what should be done, but we are also painfully aware of what we lack. We do not have enough time, confidence, experience, energy, or ability. We would prefer to serve God from a place of obvious strength, where the outcome feels reasonably secure and our contribution feels impressive.

But Christian service was never built upon the assumption that we are enough.

When Jesus told the disciples to feed the crowd, their limitations were not imaginary. Five loaves and two fish truly were not enough. Jesus did not ask them to deny the size of the need or pretend their resources were greater than they were. He invited them to place what they actually had into His hands.

That is one of the most freeing truths about serving Christ: Jesus does not ask us to become the source of what others need. He asks us to become available to the One who is.

He supplies. We carry.

Our insufficiency can lead us toward comparison, shame, avoidance, or frantic attempts to prove ourselves. But surrendered insufficiency can become the place where we learn dependence. It reminds us that whatever good comes through our lives has always originated in the grace and power of Christ.

This is about more than filling volunteer positions. It is about formation. Every time we faithfully serve, we are learning to trust Jesus with what He has placed in our hands. We discover that obedience is not the reward for finally feeling qualified. Obedience is often one of the ways Christ continues forming us.
