The Loose Cannon

The Loose Cannon

Samson’s story is one of the most familiar in the book of Judges. Most of us know about Delilah, the haircut, the blindness, and the final scene between the pillars. But Judges does not begin Samson’s story at the collapse. It begins much earlier, with the warning signs.

Samson was born into a generation that had grown comfortable under Philistine rule. Unlike earlier cycles in Judges, there is no recorded cry for deliverance. Israel had done evil again, but they do not seem desperate to be free. Yet even in the midst of compromise, God’s mercy still sends a wake-up call.

Samson was set apart from birth, called to begin Israel’s deliverance. But as his story unfolds, we see a painful gap between calling and character. He is strong, gifted, and empowered, but he is also impulsive, reactive, and ruled by desire. He sees, wants, demands, retaliates, and wins fights that reveal how unsurrendered his heart still is.

That is the warning for us. Strength without surrender is dangerous. We can be gifted and still immature. We can be effective and still unformed. We can win arguments, prove points, and overpower opposition while failing to walk in the Spirit.

But Judges 15 ends with mercy. Samson reaches the end of himself, cries out to the Lord, and God answers. The God who called him before birth meets him when he finally calls out.

That points us beyond Samson to Jesus. Samson could begin deliverance, but he could not complete it. Jesus is the better Deliverer, the Son fully surrendered to the Father, the Savior who invites the thirsty to come and drink.

So the question remains: where is God sending you a wake-up call?
