What Matters Most: Pursuing Peace and Building Up
If you’ve been part of church life for any length of time, you know that Christians can find a way to disagree about almost anything—from worship styles to coffee brands to carpet colors. But Romans 14 reminds us that the real measure of maturity isn’t how many freedoms we claim, but how much love we show.
In this passage, Paul shifts from judging others to loving them. He calls believers to stop building walls and start building people. Our freedom, Paul says, should never come at the expense of someone else’s faith. If our actions cause another believer to stumble, our liberty has crossed the line of love.
The kingdom of God isn’t about what’s on our plate or who wins the argument—it’s about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Unity matters more than being right. Love limits liberty. Peace is more powerful than preference. And conviction, when mixed with compassion, builds the kind of church that reflects Christ.
The challenge for us today is simple but profound: Will we use our freedom to serve or to separate? Will we choose peace over pride? Jesus gave His life for those who are weak—can we not give up a preference for their sake?
Let’s be people who live for what matters most: love that builds, faith that strengthens, and peace that holds the family of God together.
