Choose to Belong

Do you really value what Jesus values? That's worth thinking about when it comes to the Church.

We live in a culture that prizes independence. We want to choose our schedules, our priorities, and even the parts of Christianity that seem to work best for us. Before long, faith can become all about Me, Myself, and I. But Jesus never designed Christianity to be lived alone.

The Church was Jesus's idea. Scripture calls the Church His Bride and His Body. Then, when people believed the Gospel in Acts 2, they didn't simply make an individual decision and head home. They were baptized, added to the community, and devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, prayer, worship, generosity, and life together. That's Christianity as the apostles knew it.

Paul takes it even further in 1 Corinthians 12. Describing Christians as members of one body, he says one part cannot look at another and say, “I don't need you.” Yet that's exactly what our culture tempts us to say.

Now, this isn't about perfect Sunday attendance. Sometimes work, illness, caregiving, or other circumstances make gathering difficult or impossible. And it certainly isn't about manipulating anyone through guilt or shame. It's about belonging. And yes, sometimes belonging is complicated because churches are filled with imperfect people. Church hurt is real. Leaders can fail. People can disappoint us. Some wounds run deep. But hurt doesn't change the fact that Jesus still loves His Church.

If you've been hurt, don't allow yesterday's wound to steal tomorrow's community. God promises in Isaiah 43:2 that when we pass through deep waters, He will be with us. Even in perilous waters, Jesus hasn't abandoned us.

Becoming a Christian is a personal decision. But being a Christian was never meant to be a private thing.

So don't merely attend a church. Choose to belong to it.
