What Is Your Next Yes?

Every day, something is shaping us.

Our feeds train our attention. Advertisements awaken desires. Politics identifies enemies. Entertainment presents a vision of the good life. Friends, family patterns, wounds, habits, and appetites all influence the people we are becoming.

Formation is not optional. The question is not whether we are being formed, but who is forming us and what we are becoming.

Acts 2 records a moment when thousands of people awakened to that reality. Peter proclaimed that the Jesus they had rejected had risen from the dead and had been exalted as Lord. The truth pierced their hearts, and they asked a wonderfully honest question: “What should we do?”

Peter called them to repent, turn to God, and be baptized. Their response was more than an emotional experience or agreement with religious information. They transferred their allegiance to Jesus.

That first yes brought three realities together.

Allegiance says, “Jesus is Lord.” He receives the right to lead my life.

Identity says, “I belong to Christ.” My sin, past, achievements, failures, politics, desires, and the labels of others no longer possess the final authority to define me.

Formation says, “I am becoming like the One to whom I belong.” The Spirit begins renewing my mind, reshaping my desires, and producing the character of Christ within me.

Baptism makes these realities visible. It portrays death to the old life and resurrection into a new one. We are not baptized because we have finished becoming like Jesus. We are baptized because we have declared who will form us.

But baptism is not the conclusion of discipleship. The first believers were baptized, added to the church, and devoted themselves to biblical teaching, fellowship, worship, and prayer. Their first yes became a lifetime of next yeses.

Perhaps your next yes is trusting Jesus for the first time. Perhaps it is baptism, returning after drifting, joining Christian community, or obeying something God has already made clear.

You do not need to understand every yes that will follow.

You need only to respond faithfully to the one Jesus is placing before you now.
