Gifted for a Purpose: One Body, Many Members
One of the greatest pictures Paul gives us in the New Testament is that of the Church as a body. In Romans 12:3–8, he reminds us that each believer is uniquely gifted by God, and that those gifts are not for show but for service. Every part matters. Every member matters. And when even one part of the body is missing or inactive, the whole body feels it.
Think about it: stub your pinky toe, and suddenly walking feels impossible. Bite your tongue, and eating becomes an ordeal. A tiny part can affect the whole. Paul’s point is that the same is true in the Body of Christ. Even the smallest, most hidden gift is vital to the health of the Church.
The challenge Paul addresses is how we view ourselves. Some think too highly, assuming the church can’t function without them. Others think too little, assuming they have nothing to offer. But grace teaches us to think soberly—not inflated by pride or deflated by insecurity. God has given each of us gifts, and those gifts are meant to be used.
Romans 12 lists several examples: prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, showing mercy. These are not exhaustive but representative. And notice the emphasis—use your gift! Teach well. Serve well. Give generously. Lead diligently. Show mercy cheerfully. Gifts are not trophies to display but tools to build the Body of Christ.
At Lifehouse, we believe the same. Every member has a role. That’s why ServeTeam opportunities matter so much. Whether you’re welcoming guests, serving with kids, working behind the scenes, or encouraging others, your gift makes a difference.
So, how do you discover your gift? Start with self-examination: What do you enjoy? What needs do you notice? What seems effective when you do it? Then step out and serve. Often, you don’t learn your gift until you use it. Finally, let Scripture guide you. The Bible gives us categories of gifts that help us recognize how God has equipped us.
The bottom line is this: you were never designed to sit on the sidelines. You were gifted for a purpose. And when you use your gifts, the whole Church flourishes.
