True Freedom: Choosing the Right Master
When we think about freedom, we usually think about doing what we want, when we want, without anyone telling us otherwise. But as we dug into Romans 6:15-23 this week, Paul showed us a very different definition of freedom — and it’s one that challenges all of us.
Paul tells us that everyone is mastered by something. The question is never whether we’re serving someone — the real question is who we’re serving. We can either serve sin, which leads to shame and death, or we can serve God, which leads to righteousness and eternal life. There is no middle ground.
True freedom isn’t losing a master; it’s finding the right one.
The gospel doesn’t free us to sin without consequence; it frees us from sin’s power so we can live for God. Grace frees us not to live however we want, but to live the life we were created for — a life of holiness, joy, and purpose.
Paul reminds us that sin promises freedom but pays wages: shame now and death later. But God offers a gift instead of wages: holiness now and eternal life forever. Serving God doesn’t lead to bondage; it leads to the highest freedom imaginable.
My encouragement to you is simple: surrender afresh today. Choose to daily serve the One who gives life. As Romans 6:23 reminds us, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord."
Let’s walk in true freedom — together.
