Don't Settle for Ordinary
This past Sunday, as we concluded Samson's story in Judges 16, I found myself returning again and again to one simple truth: the greatest tragedy isn't losing God's calling—it's refusing to embrace it.
Most of us know Samson for his incredible strength, his relationship with Delilah, and the dramatic collapse of the Philistine temple. But when we slow down and read the story carefully, we discover something much deeper. Samson's greatest battle wasn't against the Philistines. It was against the calling God had placed upon his life.
From before his birth, Samson had been set apart for God's purposes. Yet throughout his life, he repeatedly longed for what seemed ordinary. Instead of embracing the privilege of belonging to God, he gradually drifted toward the very culture he had been called to confront.
If we're honest, that temptation hasn't changed.
Most of us don't wake up one morning intending to drift from God. We simply become comfortable with little compromises. We grow weary of carrying the responsibilities God has entrusted to us. We quietly begin wishing life required a little less sacrifice and a little more comfort.
Before long, what once convicted us becomes normal.
That's why Solomon's words remain so important:
"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life."
(Proverbs 4:23)
Everything begins in the heart.
One of the most hopeful verses in Samson's story is also one of the quietest:
"But before long, his hair began to grow back."
Before Samson ever pushed against the pillars...
Before the Philistines realized anything had changed...
God was already at work.
What a beautiful reminder of grace.
Maybe you've spent some time resisting God's calling. Maybe you've grown tired, discouraged, or distracted. Perhaps you've even wondered whether you've drifted too far.
Samson's story reminds us that while our failures are real, they never have the final word. God's grace does.
This week, don't ask yourself how close you can live to the world.
Instead, ask yourself this:
Am I embracing the calling God has placed on my life, or have I quietly begun resisting it?
God's calling is always worth embracing because His grace is greater than our resistance.
