After the Victory
Gideon’s story does not end where we might expect it to.
If his story ended after Judges 7, we might remember him almost entirely as the fearful man God patiently strengthened. Gideon hid in a winepress, questioned God, asked for signs, and struggled to believe he could be used. Yet God met him with patience, reduced his army, and gave Israel a victory so unmistakable that only God could receive the glory.
But Judges 8 is still in the Bible.
And Judges 8 asks a harder question: what happens after the victory?
That question matters because success is not automatically sinful. Victory, increase, influence, blessing, opportunity, and achievement are not the problem. The danger is what can happen in the heart after those things arrive.
Gideon’s later story is sobering. He shows restraint with Ephraim, but soon we see him growing harsher. He continues the mission, but God is no longer clearly leading the story. His pursuit becomes tangled with personal vengeance. He refuses the title of king, but accepts the people’s praise and creates a gold ephod that becomes a spiritual snare.
The man who tore down an idol eventually made something that became one.
That is the tragedy of Gideon. He really was used by God. He really did save Israel. But he also left behind confusion. His success revealed places in his heart that were still unsurrendered.
This is why we need God not only in weakness, but also in victory. We need Him when we are afraid, but we also need Him when we are confident. We need Him before the battle, during the victory, and after the success.
So ask yourself this week: what still needs to be surrendered?
A wound?
A success?
An area of influence?
A place where dependence has quietly become self-reliance?
The goal is not simply to be used by God. The goal is to belong fully to God.
