Little Drummer Boy

Little Drummer Boy. By Allison Orgeron
It’s the most wonderful time of the year; the sparkle of snowfall, lights and decorations everywhere you look, generous spirits, the warm glow of fire, and scrumptious goodies… all the things that make a heart smile. But the greatest part of it all is the coming of our Savior King that we celebrate each year. As we move into the Christmas season, I want to make sure that among all the chaos the holidays can bring, that we take time to consider what a simple, yet perfect love we have in Jesus. Every time I think about this, I am reminded of my favorite Christmas song. It isn’t a story we actually find anywhere in scripture, but I can’t help but believe it is exactly the kind of thing that could have happened at the birth of Jesus. In my head it plays out something like this…

*pa rum pum pum pum* Mary and Joseph, while resting and swaddling their precious baby boy, hear a gentle rhythmic beat in the distance.
*pa rum pum pum pum* It continues to grow louder, nearer, stronger.
*pa rum pum pum pum* Mary and Joseph peer out to see a young boy approaching, playing a little drum. The drum is hanging from a strap around his neck. He is clearly skilled and passionate about making music.
*pa rum pum pum pum* As he walks closer, he spots Mary and Joseph; in their arms, a little baby boy. Immediately, he knows this is exactly who he has been looking for.
He approaches them with glee. “I heard great news of a baby boy, a Messiah! I am just a poor boy, and I own nothing of value to give to a King… I have only this, my greatest possession: a drum. I would like to play a song for him, if I may.”
Delighted, Mary and Joseph say, “of course!” So the boy begins.
To honor the King, he plays a joyous beat on his drum, pa rum pum pum pum.
The earth around him compliments; birds singing the melodic line, the wind percussively rustling the leaves of the trees, the ox and lamb dancing to the beat! All creation around them joins in to worship in a symphony to the King .
The boy plays his drum for the King, pa rum pum pum pum.
He plays his very best for the King, pa rum pum pum pum.
The song concludes in a great finale, and they turn to the baby King.
Under his breath, welling up with tears, the boy whispers, “he… he smiled at me!”
He can’t help but break out in song again and again, to glorify and worship the King of Kings.

What an unforgettable encounter to have with Jesus! To be in the presence of the Savior of the world and see Him smile back at you while you praise Him would be wonderfully overwhelming to say the least. And I know without a doubt, that every time we lift our voices and play our instruments in praise to honor that same King, Jesus, He is smiling right back at us.
What a treasure it is to serve a King who takes delight in the simplest things!

What a treasure it is to worship the great King of Kings who knows us so personally!
What a treasure it is to be loved by the Savior of the world who delights in simply spending time with us!

When you have nothing left to bring to Jesus, remember that you need only to bring yourself and your worship. This simple gift is perfect in the eyes of our loving King.

Merry Christmas Lifehouse!
